In 1776, Adam Smith wrote the Wealth of Nations.  In it, he made the following statement:  “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”

Techonomic Man has updated the professions, but not the concepts of this sentiment to: “It is not from the benevolence of the biochemist, the coder, or the electrical engineer that we expect our technology, but from their regard to their own interest.”
